Involvement, discrepancy, and change.

Abstract
Ss took a position under high or low involvement; were subsequently exposed to information which was slightly, moderately, or extremely discrepant from the initial position; and the amount of change in their positions was measured. Under low involvement, there was more change with greater discrepancy; under high involvement, the relationship was nonmonotonic, with maximum change occurring at moderate discrepancy. The situation is analyzed in terms of the relative difficulty of position change and rejection of the information as alternative modes of resolution.
