Abstract
The ocorrence of previously undescribed hybrids between Hordeum jubatum L. and Elymus villosus Muhl. ex. Willd. is reported from the vicinty-Ames, Iowa. These are described as X Elyhordeum iowense Pohl. The single colony consists of at least 75 clumps, all F1 of uniform morphology and all completely sterile, growing with both parents. They are intermediate between the parental spp. or approach one of them in awns, rachis fragility, anther length, number of spike lets per node, number of florets per spikelet, glume length and width, leaf width andpubescence, and auricle development. Meiosis in the anthers is extremely abnormal and no fertile pollen is produced. Somatic chromosome number of all 3 taxa concerned is 2n = 28.
