Abstract
Cefotetan (ICI 156834), a new cephamycin derivative, demonstrated in vitro good broad spectrum activity against 398 clinical isolates. Ninety per cent of the majority of Gram-negative species were inhibited at concentrations of 1 mg/l or below. It was four to five times more active than cefoxitin against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Serratia, Providencia and Salmonella spp. and half of the Enterobacter and Citrobacter strains, but not for the Acinetobacter spp. The activity of both the antibiotics against Haemophilus influenzae was similar though for Staphylococcus aureus and Bacteroides fragilis cefoxitin was 2 to 4 times more powerful than cefotetan. The new compound was inactive against Streptococcus faecalis. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
