Abstract
The theory of orthokinetic flocculation has been extended to systems approximating those encountered in water-treatment plant flocculators. The theory incorporates parameters representing the floc size distribution, flocculator compartmentalization, and floc concentration, as well as the input energy and retention period. The kinetics of flocculation were studied by observing the flocculation of kaolin and alum in a laboratory scale flocculator and by simulating the progress of flocculation with a digital computer. The results of these studies substantiated the nature of the theoretical expression and made possible the determination of several size distribution functions. Keywords
