Abstract
The High Plains, Region 17 (Fig. 3; Table 2, Heath, this volume), includes about 450,000 km2 of the central United States east of the Rocky Mountains in the southern part of the Great Plains. The High Plains aquifer, which underlies this region, is the principal source of water in one of the major agricultural areas in the United States. During 1980, about 170,000 wells pumped 22,000 hm3 of water from the aquifer to irrigate 54,000 km2 (Heimes and Luckey, 1983). The following discussion is limited to those geologic units that comprise, or are in contact with, the High Plains aquifer.Keywords
