The influence of soil moisture tension on the fungal population of a pinewood soil

Abstract
In an attempt to make a critical evaluation of the effect of soil moisture content on soil mycofloras the concept of pF, as a means of expressing the availability of soil water, has been applied. In both laboratory and field experiments fungi have been isolated from H layer, A1 and C horizon soil samples taken from a pinewood soil, the soil samples having been held at known pF values. The results indicate that, for all soil samples, the pF range 1.9 to 2.3 (0.08 to 0.2 bar) is optimal for all fungal species, below pF 1.9 (0.08 bar) and above pF 3.8 (6.2 bar) there is a marked reduction in frequency of occurrence of many species.Trichoderma viride and Penicillium spp. appear capable of growing under a wide range of soil moisture conditions.Keywords
