Glucose and Pyruvate Metabolism inDaucus carotaCells: The Effect of the Ammonium Ion

Abstract
In Daucus carota cells cultivated in vitro, the ammonium ion stimulates the incorporation of radioactivity from labelled glucose and labelled pyruvate into CO2 and into the residue insoluble in 60 per cent (v/v) ethanol. There is a higher 14CO2 production from [6-14C2] glucose than from [6-14C] glucose. These results suggest a possible stimulation of glycolysis by the ammonium ion.
