Abstract
THE surgical treatment of umbilical hernia has undergone only slight variation since the classic procedure of transverse imbrication of fascia and peritoneum was proposed by Charles Mayo1 in 1895. The present report is a critical evaluation of the results of herniorrhaphy in a group of patients in whom the umbilical hernia was a complication of cirrhosis of the liver.The thesis of this study is that the hepatofugal portosystemic collateral pathways in the umbilical area are compromised during the course of umbilical operations in patients with cirrhosis of the liver.The 16 cases that are the basis of this report . . .
