Bacteremia Due to Atypical Streptococci Belonging to Lancefield Group A: Report of Two Cases

Abstract
Two strains of Lancefield group A streptococci isolated from the blood of two individuals exhibited several aberrant characteristics-lack of beta-hemolysis, bacitracin resistance, non-typability by M or T schemes, lack of DNAase activity, and a benign clinical course. On the basis of the characteristics and behavior of these strains and of other atypical group A streptococci reported in the literature, two distinct classes of atypical Lancefield group A streptococci can be recognized, one closely and the other distantly related to the classic Streptococcus pyogenes.
