Abstract
Growth was obtained in a complex chemically defined medium. Single omission studies with this medium showed that histidine, arginine, methionine, proline, aspartic acid, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, glutamic acid, valine, lysine, threonine, cystine and riboflavin were essential and glucose was stimulatory for all strains studied. Tryptophan, alanine and thiamine were essential for some strains. A medium consisting of essential and stimulatory substances plus a mineral supplement produced less growth than the complex medium. The presence of 10% CO2 rendered riboflavin non-essential in the complex medium. Keywords
