Abstract
Specifically, what use are university practical physics classes? I do not want to question the usefulness of practical work in schools, but I do want to suggest, cautiously, that most university practical classes are a waste of time. And this, if it is true, is a pity, for two reasons. First, because we have little enough time to waste if we are to teach physics adequately in three years, and secondly, because the teaching of experimental physics is at least as important as the teaching of theory.
