The Experimental Transmission of Ovine Pulmonary Adenomatosis

Abstract
Pulmonary adenomatosis of sheep, as seen in Great Britain, has been transmitted experimentally to sheep using a 10% fluid suspension of affected lung from field cases of the disease, administered by intrapulmonary injection or by repeated exposure to an aerial spray. One group of sheep treated by the latter method was also kept in contact with the field cases which subsequently supplied the inoculation material. The macroscopic and histologic features of the pulmonary lesions resulting in the inoculated animals are described and illustrated. On the basis of the pathologic changes in their experimental material and a survey of the literature, the authors opine that the disease is a transmissible neoplasm and suggest that the cause may be a Mycoplasma or a virus.
