Abstract
Five young bitches in various stages of gestation were inoculated with Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasma of human, canine and porcine origin were pathogenic for pregnant bitches and caused abortion or premature parturition. Organisms were isolated from 23 of 28 pups born of 5 bitches. In utero transmission of toxoplasmosis was demonstrated by isolation of Toxoplasma from pups collected aseptically and killed as they emerged from the birth canal. Toxoplasma were isolated from the placenta, allantoic fluid, milk and mammary gland of the infected bitches. Identity of the organism was proven by morphologic, antigenic and pathogenic similarity to the Toxoplasma inoculated. Keywords
