In-vitro fertilization of ova from senescent mice and hamsters

Abstract
There were no statistical differences for young and aged animals in the proportions of ova fertilized or in their stages of fertilization. There was a marked contrast in the numbers of fertilized ova of the 2 strains of mice [C57B46 and CD-1]. A high incidence of polyspermy in ova from both age groups of hamsters is a condition found only in vitro, since few ova from young or senescent females exhibit this trait in vivo. If techniques could be devised for culturing ova to the blastocyst stage, they could be transferred directly into the uterus of young recipients and provide a better means of determining how the female tract of the aged hamster influences the ovum.
