TIMING OF LARVAL EXODUS FROM SHEEP AND CARRION IN THE SHEEP BLOWFLY, LUCILIA CUPRINA

Abstract
After completing their development larvae of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, leave the sheep or carcase at night. This pattern of exodus was found to be present through a wide range of photoperiods and nightly minimum temperatures. The time of peak exodus during the night varied depending on whether it was early or late in the period of exodus from the strike. Evidence is presented that an endogenous rhythm is partially responsible for the pattern of exodus. Since sheep rest at night in preferred camp sites, the pupae and emerging adults of Lucilia cuprina are probably concentrated around these camp sites.RÉSUMÉ: Synchronisation des sorties larvaires chez la lucilie du mouton, Lucilia cuprinaParvenues au terme de leur développement, les larves de Lucilia cuprina quittent leur hôte (mouton ou charogne) au cours de la nuit. Cette particularité s'est vérifiée pour un large spectre de photo‐périodes et de minima de températures nocturnes. Les sorties de larves au cours de la la nuit présentent un maximum qui varie pour une même période en fonction de la nuit considérée. Il est possible de mettre en évidence un rythme endogène responsable en partie de la distribution des sorties. Comme les moutons se rassemblent la nuit sur certains sites préférentiels, nymphes et adultes de L. cuprina sont probablement concentrés aux alentours de ces dortoirs.This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
