Abstract
In this article the authors discuss research they conducted that examined the relationship between the situational factors an employee faces and the referents they use when comparing their work to that of another individual. They note that employees typically compare facets of their job, such as pay and security, to those of co-workers and with their own experiences in other settings. They focused on understanding why employees select particular referents when taking part in this comparative process. They note that two of leading theories on this subject state that employees will select referents based on their availability of knowledge and on relevance of the reference for drawing a comparison. The job facets their study examined include pay, job complexity, security and supervision. Keywords
