Abstract
ALKALI burns of the eye, with their rapidly blinding sequelae, rank with the most disastrous of household accidents. Numerous alkali products are found in the average home. Clear ammonia water is a common adjuvant to the housewife's armamentarium of cleaning agents, being widely used diluted in the dishpan and floor pail and "straight" to cleanse ovens and toilet bowls. Caustic soda (lye or sodium hydroxide) is the major active ingredient of the homemaker's favorite remedy to open slow or clogged drains.
