Effects of nuclear polyhedrosis virus on the growth, development and reproduction in surviving generations of the armyworm Mythimna (Pseudaletia) separata (Walker)

Abstract
Sublethal effects of the LC25 and LC50 nuclear polyhedrosis virus treatments, on growth, development, fecundity, average egg production and per cent egg hatchability in the treated followed by the first filial (F1) generation of Mythimna (Pseudaletia) separata, are investigated. In both the generations, weights of the larval, pupal and adult stages and, the adult longevity decreased, while developmental durations for the larval and pupal stages increased significantly. Further, pupation and adult emergence rates, growth index, fecundity, average egg production and per cent egg hatchability declined considerably. Moreover, the reproductive potential worked out for F1 generation indicated a decrease of 15 and 27.4% growth rate in the progenies of LC25 and LC50 NPV treated groups. The findings suggested that the intrinsic effects of the NPV treatments did not promote pest resurgence but suppressed pest population in the subsequent generations, possibly owing to the general debilitation and reproductive deficiency caused by the virus in the survivors.Zusammenfassung: Wirkungen des Kernpolyeder‐Virus auf Wachstum, Entwicklung und Reproduktion der Nachkommen von Mythimna (Pseudaletia) separata (Walker) (Lep., Noctuidae)Es wurden die subletalen Wirkungen von LC25‐ und LC50‐Behandlungen mit Kernpolyeder‐Virus (NPV) auf Wachstum, Entwicklung, Fekundität, Eizahl und Eischlüpfquote der auf die behandelten Raupen von M. (Ps.) separata folgenden F1‐Nachkommen untersucht. In beiden Generationen verringerten sich das Gewicht der Raupen, Puppen und Adulten sowie die Adulten‐Lebenszeit, während die Entwicklungsdauer der Raupen und Puppen sich signifikant erhöhte. Weiterhin nahmen Verpuppungs‐ und Adultenschlüpfrate, Wachstumsindex, Fekundität, Eiproduktion und Eischlüpfrate erheblich ab. Darüber hinaus zeigte das Vermehrungspotential der F1‐Generation eine Abnahme von 15,0% bei LC25 und von 27,4% bei LC50 NPV. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß die inneren Wirkungen von NPV nicht die Erholung des Schädlings förderten, sondern dessen Nachkommen schädigten. Die Ursache hierfür könnte eine allgemeine Schwächung sowie eine Verringerung der Fruchtbarkeit bei den Nachkommen des Schädlings sein.This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
