Organic reagents for the precipitation of nitrate ion. Part I. N-substituted 1-naphthylmethylamines

Abstract
A series of N-substituted 1-naphthylmethylamines has been investigated as a source of possible new organic precipitants for the nitrate ion in aqueous solution. Several substituted N-benzyl-1-naphthylmethylamines, in particular, N-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1-naphthylmethylamine, are shown to possess analytically useful properties as precipitants for nitrate; gravimetric and titrimetric procedures have been developed based on these reagents. The new reagents are readily accessible and offer considerable advantages over the conventional reagent, nitron.
