Pruritus

Abstract
Usually, itching is regarded as an annoyance rather than a medical problem. However, in some circumstances, it is so intense and so unrelenting that it awakens patients and dominates their thoughts. Dr Phillips discusses the many cutaneous and systemic causes of pruritus and the areas to investigate during evaluation. He also describes several types of treatment and when each is likely to be helpful, with special attention to both first- and second-generation oral antihistamines.
