Abstract
FOR THE past several years, the Council on Long Range Planning and Development has concentrated on analyzing the changing environment of medicine. As an extension of this work, the Council has undertaken a project to develop perspectives on the practice of medicine in the year 2000. The purposes of this activity were to identify how the future environment might affect the American Medical Association (AMA) and to suggest possible strategies that the Association might employ to respond to environmental change. The Council found that the need for a broadly based medical association such as the AMA will persist in the future. It also found that some aspects of the future environment are likely to have adverse impacts on the AMA.
