Abnormal Leukocyte Response in Alcoholism

Abstract
Leukopenic responses to bacterial infections were seen in twelve hospital admissions of ten chronic alcoholic patients. Three patients had thrombocytopenia in addition to leukopenia. Hepatic involvement was consistent with fatty metamorphosis and splenomegaly was not present. Investigations using endotoxin tend to support the concept that the chronic alcoholic patient has a decreased marrow granulocyte reserve. The exact cause of this is uncertain.
