Critical Examination of Sex Education in the Elementary School

Abstract
This study presents the position of educational and religious leaders, as well as that of biology, physiology, psychology, and sociology on sex education in the elementary school. The study reviews what authorities in these fields consider to be the school's function and responsibility. Findings indicate that family life education, of which sex education is a part, should be integrated into the school program at all levels. It points to the school administrators and lack of trained teachers as the chief bottlenecks to family life education in the public schools. Work in family life education, the study concludes, should be spearheaded jointly in the school and community by the Parent Teacher Association and the school staff. The study emphasizes a need for adequate pre- and in-service teacher training and adequate teaching aids.
