Abstract
Trimethylammonio-derivatives of pyridine, nitropyridine, pyrimidine, and nitropyrimidine have been prepared and the kinetics of their reactivity towards hydroxide ion have been measured. Pyrimidin-2-yltrimethylammonium chloride has been found to be ca. 700 times more reactive than 2-chloropyrimidine and ca. 5 times less reactive than 2-methylsulphonylpyrimidine, at 20°. Ionisation constants and u.v. and n.m.r. spectra are recorded and discussed.
