Abstract
The study, based on local sources, conference participation, and field observations, reconstructs an account of the environmental impacts of the former Soviet Union's first plutonium producing plant, known as the Mayak production association and located near Chelyabinsk. Among the impacts described are the radioactive pollution of the waters of the Techa River and of a number of reservoirs impounded along its course, the infamous “Kyshtym disaster” caused by the explosion of an underground waste storage container in 1957, and recent aeolean transport of radioactive particulates from dried lake bottom deposits during drought years. Keywords
