Abstract
Although Bagnall credits Francis Page (1) with the first observation in 1951 that quinacrine gave some relief of symptoms in rheumatoid arthritis, the use of antimalarial drugs in the treatment of this disease has become increasingly popular since Bagnall himself (2) published in 1957 the results of a 4-year study in which he obtained a "good" result in some 70% of the cases. The first warnings of hazards from this therapy began to appear soon afterwards. In 1958, Cohen and Calkins (3) in this country and Hobbs and Calnan (4) in England called attention to the possible serious visual disturbancesKeywords
