Time-dependent sticking coefficients and mantle growth on interstellar grains

Abstract
We discuss the nature of the interaction between gas phase species of all types and the surfaces of interstellar grains. The effective sticking coefficient on bare grain surfaces is shown to be a function of surface coverage. Hence the time-scale to establish monolayer coverage is longer (in some cases much longer) than hitherto assumed. Following monolayer coverage, mantle formation continues but the sticking coefficient varies throughout this process. The time variation of the effective sticking coefficient is illustrated in several cases.
