Abstract
The methods for treating center-of-mass motion in the nuclear shell model are reviewed. The existence of inherent difficulties of principle is pointed out for any method which attempts to remove center-of-mass effects from a shell-model wave function without considering the relation of the shell-model wave function to the Hamiltonian of the real nucleus. Keywords
