Abstract
Bud take on saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia Nutt.) was significantly lower on Malus pumila Mill, and Sorbus aucuparia L. than on Cotoneaster acutifolia Jurcz. and Crataegus arnoldiana Sarg. when budded on 5 Aug., but only Malus had a lower take when budded on 14 Aug. At the end of the season greatest growth had occurred on the Cotoneaster rootstock, followed by plants on Sorbus and Crataegus. The later budding date tended to give the strongest plants. After 3 yr in a fruiting plantation, only one-third of the plants on Malus remained and these were showing severe symptoms of delayed incompatibility. Greatest yields, as well as greatest growth, were on Crataegus and Sorbus. Plants on Cotoneaster were significantly smaller and did not show the precocity normally associated with dwarfing. Satisfactory nursery performance plus early fruiting history suggests that C. arnoldiana should be considered as a rootstock for saskatoons. Keywords
