Abstract
Blood samples obtained directly from the splenic vein in anesthetized dogs before and after splenic contraction induced by epinephrine, and control arterial samples obtained before the injn., were tested for O2 capacity, relative red cell volume and water content of the red cells. From these data the percentage of hemoglobin concn. of the red cells was calculated. No evidence was found for any change in water or hemoglobin content of the cells released from splenic stores when compared with those of the general circulation. The cells released from storage by splenocontrac-tion apparently do not differ in their O2-carrying ability from circulating cells. The water content of dog red cells is remarkably constant at 64.7% and the percentage of hemoglobin in dry wt. of dog red cells is 83-84% but more variable than the water content. The avg. corpuscular hemoglobin content of dog blood is about 32.5 g./100 cc. red cells.
