Abstract
ACETOPHENETIDIN has been for the past half century a common constituent of proprietary headache and analgesic mixtures. These mixtures, most frequently a combination of caffeine, acetophenetidin and acetylsalicylic acid, are widely marketed under various trade names directly to the public over the counter.The best known toxic effect of acetophenetidin is on the red blood cells (methemoglobinemia, sulfhemoglobinemia and anemia). Toxicity may also be manifested in disturbances of the central nervous system (headache, tremor, lability of temperament, irritability, muscular twitching, confusion and insomnia).
