Abstract
Purified prepns. of 2 Coxsackie viruses (Strain 1816, Herpangina, and Strain 4520, Pleurodynia) were examined by electron microscopy and ultracentrifugation. Both agents have diam. of 37 m[mu] for single particles and 28 m[mu] for particles in rows. Under appropriate conditions the virus particles form orderly hexagonal arrays. Application of the concept of pseudo-velocity enabled the authors to estimate the sedimentation constants of the infectious agents; values of 167S and 175S were obtained for Strains 1816 and 4520, respectively. A value of 153S was derived for 1816 by visible boundary measurements but prepns. of 4520 were unsuited for producing refractive index boundaries. Keywords
