Observation as a research method

Abstract
Of all research methods, observation is perhaps the closest to everyday life. We all ‘people watch’. While we can write intuitively about what we see, we need to acknowledge that individuals differ in how they perceive and construe the world. It must be accepted that there is a need for the neutral, naive observer. Our selection of what we ‘choose’ to observe, and therefore what we exclude from our observations, also depends on our particular theoretical perspective, as does the way in which we interpret our observations. In order to avoid the trap of observer bias, we need to devise ways to overcome these pitfalls.
