Abstract
A number of British alder populations is described with reference to points in the ecology of the sp. already emphasized (McVean, D. N. Ecology of Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. I, II. Jour. Ecol. 43(1): 46-71. IE, IV. Jour. Ecol. 44(1): 195-225). Notes on the floristics and successional relationships of these populations are presented. The relationships of the ground flora to soil water content and base status and the part played by the alder in hydroseres and on soils of impeded drainage are summarized.
