Abstract
For demographic studies of fertility, mortality and nuptiality the numbers of births, deaths and marriages in a population group are normally related to the aggregate number of individuals composing the group. Such studies thus presuppose a system of registration of births, deaths and marriages and also the existence of censuses or some similar record of the size of population. However church registers, recording baptisms, burials and marriages start in some European countries a considerable time before the first censuses were taken. Historical demographers have therefore tried to evolve methods for extracting their data from the information available in the church registers. Keywords
