Abstract
The marine algal communities at the north end of Gt. Cumbrae, Firth of Clyde, are those characteristic of sheltered shores. 16 communities are recognized, 11 of which are restricted to rocky substrata, while the remainder occur on sand, mud or pebbles. The best developed communities of the area are the Pelvetia-Fucus spiralis community, the Ascophyllum community, the Gigartina-Cladophora community and the Laminaria saccharina community. The horizontal distribution of the several communities seems to depend mainly upon changes in the degree of slope of the shore. Details of seasonal change in the communities have been recorded. A comparison has been drawn between the algal vegetation of Gt. Cumbrae and that of Castletown Bay, Isle of Man, where a survey had previously been carried out. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
