Epithelial Papilloma of Nose and Accessory Sinuses

Abstract
The literature pertaining to epithelial papillomas of the nose and paranasal sinuses is reviewed. Two new cases of epithelial papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses with transformation into frankly invasive epidermoid cancer are presented. The patients died due to local disease but without metastases. The difficulties in microscopic diagnosis due to the size of the tumor and the multiple histologic variations in different areas are used to explain the apparent rarity of frank carcinomatous transformation of epithelial papillomas in those cases which clinically were obviously malignant. The histologic changes of the transformation from benign epithelial papillomas to invasive squamous carcinomas are presented. The authors plead for an aggressive therapeutic approach to this condition, in the hope of improving its prognosis.
