Abstract
Chlortetracycline was fed to chicks at levels of 10, 50, 500, and 1000 mg/kg of diet from hatching time until 4 weeks of age. This treatment significantly increased the thyroid size. Regression analysis gave b-values to show that antibiotic dosage up to 100 mg/kg of diet was correlated to increase in thyroid size. Data suggest a seasonal response to chlortetracycline by the thyroid. Comparison with the effect of thiouracil on thyroid size indicates that the antibiotic did not duplicate the action of this goitrogen. It is postulated that the antibiotic increased the thyrotropic hormone output of the pituitary, thereby increasing thyroid size and activity. Keywords
