Abstract
This paper describes a new technique for measuring the noise autocorrelation in magnetic recording systems. Unlike the spectrum, the autocorrelation function characterizes non-stationary noise as well as stationary noise so it is particularly suitable for signal dependent noise often found in disks. In addition, noise sources can be separated by properly choosing the sample space. Many interesting properties of particulate and metal film disks were found by this technique.
