Abstract
The local critical behavior of magnets is modified in the vicinity of free surfaces. These surface effects can be studied by using semi-infinite model systems. Recent theoretical work on the semi-infinite n-vector model is reviewed. When possible the theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results. The general new features which show up in the field-theoretical renormalization-group approach are explained. Systems with defect planes and n-vector films are also briefly discussed. This publication has 26 references indexed in Scilit:
