Abstract
Positive-pion scattering at 990±30 Mev has been examined in a 6×3×2 in. hydrogen bubble chamber without a magnetic field. The cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering were found to be 15.3±1.5 mb and 12.6±3.3 mb, respectively. The inelastic scattering cross section includes mb of production and 0.78±0.14 mb of production. A simple pion-pion model which predicts the branching ratios for double pion production in collisions is found to be inconsistent with the double pion production observed in this experiment. The relation of the experiment to experiments in the region of the second and third resonances is discussed.
