Abstract
Quantities of Nitrobacter sufficient for whole cell and enzyme studies have been obtained by cultivation under forced aeration in a soluble mineral medium. That the nitrite oxidase activity of washed cells and extracts is intimately linked to the cytochrome system was shown by manometric, spectral and inhibition studies. Cytochrome inhibitors but not uncouplers readily inhibited nitrite oxidation. The nitrite‐oxidizing system of cell‐free extracts was of relatively low activity compared to washed cells.
