Abstract
The provision of life and career counselling for adults in the early 1970s is examined, distinguishing between counselling and other helping strategies. A major paradigm shift which is influencing counselling along with other aspects of society is identified. The range of provision of adult life and careers counselling existing in 1985 is summarised, and some speculations on future development are offered. Keywords
