Abstract
The author offers social workers a set of guidelines to assess the sources and types of social support that people use as first and direct lines of defense in coping with life events and chronic hardships and to highlight how these direct ties mediate people's access to other supportive peer relationships. He also suggests that social workers organize support groups and workshops both to assess and strengthen the role of network support in protecting and promoting mental health.
