UNUSUAL RESPONSE OF THE INFERIOR OLIVE TO GLIOMAS

Abstract
In 31 of 78 cases of gliomas of the brain stem the lesions involved the olivary nuclei. Eighteen of the lesions were bilateral. In 3 of the cases of bilateral tumors in which the lesions extended partly into the olive from the rostral end of that structure, the gray matter of the olivary nuclei had a diffuse, enlarged and unusual cellular appearance. These cells were demonstrated to be astrocytic in origin. They were judged to be reactive astrocytes arising in response to some influence of the neoplasm, the effects of which are limited to the astrocytes of the gray matter of the olives.
