Abstract
We have assembled data on the rate of change of the U.S. shorelines, including those of the Great Lakes. Obtained from geologists and engineers, our data base covers 1689 sites. The national average (unweighted) shoreline erosion rate is 0.40 m/yr. Along the Atlantic coast the average rate of recession is 0.8 m/yr; the Gulf coast is 1.8 m/yr; and the Pacific coast rate, including Alaska, is 0.005 m/yr. Statistics for Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and the Great Lakes are also summarized. Keywords
