The Frozen Storage of Ram Semen

Abstract
Glycerol requirement for freezing ram semen, egg yolk supplementation of a milk diluter for added temperature shock protection and motility decline during -79[degree]C storage were studied. Sperm survival after freezing ram semen with 0 to 15% glycerol was significantly greater'' at 6 and 8%. Addition of egg yolk to a heated homogenized milk diluter did not increase ram sperm survival after freezing. Furthermore, the average sperm survival appeared to decrease as egg yolk increased. Frozen ram semen was periodically thawed and examined for motility during a 14-month period of -79[degree]C storage. Motility declined rapidly during the first 2 months of storage but changed very little thereafter.
