Abstract
The static electric dipole polarizabilities of neutral inert gas atoms are obtained with the Thomas–Fermi (TF) and the Thomas–Fermi–Dirac (TFD) statistical models. The TF model yields an infinite polarizability; the TFD model yields polarizabilities which are much larger than experiment, though the percent error decreases with increasing atomic number. Keywords
