Abstract
The literature on burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is reviewed with particular reference to its prevalence, local and systemic etiologic factors, psychogenic background and treatment. Research requirements are discussed, which focus on different clinical and psychological parameters and the necessity to evaluate BMS. Finally, a treatment protocol including oral, medical and psychological investigations is presented. Keywords
