Abstract
A rapidly growing caseload led this home healthcare agency in New England to develop and implement a new management structure built around the belief that 1) Professionals can manage their own practice and function as part of a self-directed work team; 2) Management's role is to foster an organizational culture which facilitates this; and 3) Total quality management is based on people-oriented service. A “flex-time” system, competitive compensation and empowerment stemming from responsible autonomy have begun to reduce turnover and enhance “word of mouth” advertising. Keywords
